Freilich came to New Orleans in 1989 after living for many years in various parts of California where he completed his studies in composition from California Institute of the Arts. He started the Naked Orchestra in 1996 as a follow up group to his quintet Naked on the Floor, and acts as the groups leading director and organizer. He created the group to perform his plethora of original compositions and as a fresh approach to composing and performing new music. Freilich has many other projects and accomplishments that range from operas and classical arrangements like his octet reduction of Peter and the Wolf to co-founding a vibrant klezmer ensemble, the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars.
